This one started life as a Turner 454X Crystal desk microphone.

The body was a bit beat up and the original crystal element was dead, so I decided it would be a perfect candidate for a chop job.

The head was chopped and the original mount point was ground and sanded flush. I originally finished the mic in a grey light hammer finish.

Later I decided a two tone finish, black and grey would look better.

This custom mic was for a friend, so I decided to customize the front bezel with his name.

I already knew he would prefer a 1/4 audio jack to the old screw type and he would want at volume control at his finger tips. The microphone was layered with multiple coats lacquer and wet sanded between coats to keep it as smooth as possible. The high gloss is a bit difficult to photograph. You really need to see it to appreciate it.

The center windscreen button was missing, so I made a new one sporting a custom "Hewitt's Garage Studio" logo.

The dead crystal element was replaced with a new Astatic 575 ceramic element for durability and tone.

2009-01-01: Chopped, refinished, re wired, new element installed.
